WELCOME TO

NEW ERA JIU JITSU

Teaching is more than just imparting information you've heard before. It's about connecting with people and effectively communicating with them. It's a great feeling to know that you're not alone in your struggles, and that there's a community of like-minded people who can relate and support you through your journey.

As a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, we place a heavy emphasis on understanding the concepts behind the techniques. While there are countless videos on social media showcasing various moves and chains, it's rare to find someone who truly breaks down why a particular submission or technique is successful. By focusing on the underlying concepts and principles, we can apply them in various positions and situations, making us more versatile and adaptable on the mats.

For example, as someone who loves triangles, I have learned several variations of the technique from different positions like closed guard, side control, the back, and even 50-50. By understanding the underlying concept behind the triangle and how to apply it in various scenarios, I can execute the move with greater efficiency and effectiveness.

At New Era Jiu-Jitsu we are committed to providing a learning environment that focuses on concepts and principles, rather than just memorizing techniques. We believe that this approach not only leads to better performance on the mats, but also encourages personal growth and development.

About Us

JIU JITSU FOR KIDS

Our Lil Jelly's program places a heavy emphasis on technique, and we believe in reinforcing the same moves throughout the week to ensure mastery. We even have a conditioning day that challenges our young students and helps them understand the value of perseverance and hard work. We strive to teach kids that suffering can have a purpose, whether in Jiu-Jitsu or in life.

But our program is about much more than just technique. We prioritize creating a positive and supportive team environment where children can develop self-confidence, resilience, and a sense of community. We understand that life can be tough, and we work together with parents to help children navigate any issues they may be facing.

Our goal is to prepare children to be self-sufficient, confident, and capable of handling life's challenges. As parents ourselves, we take pride in seeing the positive impact our program has on children and their families. While mastering Jiu-Jitsu techniques is important, we believe that building character and fostering personal growth is equally vital.

At our gym, we are committed to providing a well-rounded learning experience that emphasizes principles and concepts, rather than just memorization. With consistent training, even young children can become skilled practitioners who are prepared to face whatever life throws their way. Join us today to see how our program can help your child thrive both on and off the mat.

About Us

COMPETITION JIU JITSU

At our school, we have a competitive team that participates in tournament seasons every six months. Students who want to try out for the team have a six-week trial period, and if they don't make it, they have another opportunity in the next season. We don't believe in the "everybody gets a trophy" approach and don't consider fairness a real thing. Instead, we have specific criteria for making the team, including attending at least three classes a week, showing a willingness to learn and being humble in both winning and losing and demonstrating good behavior at home and school.

Some students who are enthusiastic about joining the team may lose their motivation when they realize how much hard work it takes to make the cut. However, we have had students transfer from other gyms because they felt their competition teams weren't strong enough. Those students who don't show the necessary effort and commitment are not going to make the team. Once on the team, we require our students to compete in at least one tournament, but they can choose to compete in more if they wish. If they are first-time competitors, we always recommend they start with Naga, which offers positional-only competitions, allowing them to gain experience without worrying about more advanced techniques.

At our school, we don't force anyone to compete. Our goal is to find ways to help everyone achieve their goals collectively and individually. Whether someone is here for health benefits, self-defense, or competition, we support them. However, if someone wants to compete, they must be willing to prepare seriously, taking a camp approach. We don't allow anyone below white belt three stripe to compete, and every adult who wants to compete is required to commit to a four-week training camp beforehand. During the camp, they must attend a minimum of four classes a week, including a competition class and two technique classes.

Making our competitive team requires hard work, dedication, and commitment. We don't believe in making things "fair" or handing out participation trophies, but instead focus on developing the skills and character of our students. Our approach has led to success in tournaments and helped our students achieve their goals.

MEET PROFESSOR

MATT SIERRA

Professor Matt Sierra has been training in the art of Jiu Jitsu since October of 2011, and is currently training under Professor Isiah Wright out of Onyx Jiu Jitsu.

Professor Sierra's instructing background is extensive and multi-faceted, from teaching Jiu Jitsu at Bromley East Charter School to training many brave law enforcement officers. Whether he's coaching kids, adults, or large or small groups, Professor Sierra has an abundance of experience in it all.

In fact, Professor's Jiu Jitsu journey began from his pursuits in the MMA media world. Before there was a Professor Sierra, there was NEW ERA Sierra.

"MMA brought me to Jiu Jitsu. It only seems fitting I pay homage to the very thing that got me started."
